What Is TMF?

TMF Health Quality Institute (TMF), formerly Texas Medical Foundation, is an Austin, Texas based nonprofit consulting company focused on promoting quality health and health care through contracts with federal, state and local governments, as well as private organizations. TMF partners with health care providers in a variety of settings to ensure that every person receives the appropriate care, every time.

Then & Now

When TMF was founded more then 30 years ago, it reviewed the quality of patient care delivered by Texas physicians. In 1984, TMF was awarded the Medicare peer review organization contract to do medical review for Medicare beneficiaries. Since then the contract has evolved to primarily include quality improvement activities in nursing homes, hospitals, physician offices and home health agencies.

More recently, TMF has expanded beyond Texas with its consulting services. Some of TMF's consulting services include:

  • review of claims to identify utilization patterns and trends,
  • review of medical records for determination of appropriate utilization
  • quality of care,
  • coding,
  • development and implementation of quality assurance and quality improvement projects,
  • data abstraction, analysis and reporting, and
  • assessment of compliance with medical practice guidelines and state and federal law.
